Being a Bard: How to Become a Deity in D&D

I am sad to report that this will be the last in the series of Being a Bard blog posts as the campaign featuring our intrepid bard, Roger Sparx, has come to its conclusion. For those of you that have followed the story from the beginning, it started with an account of The Bugs Bunny Maneuver, explained How to Punk a Dragon and even touched on Being a Bard During a Quarantine. This final installment will show you one possible path to making your character immortal. I am, of course, talking about making your character a deity in the Dungeons and Dragons pantheon.

Being a Bard During a Quarantine

As it has come to pass, a pox has befallen our realm. Along with every other citizen of this, and the adjoining kingdoms, our once social bard Roger Sparx (nigh, life of the party) has also been compelled into seclusion. Needless to say, being sequestered is NOT a bard’s natural state. A bard needs people in their life—people to entertain, people to charm, people to tease, people to bluff and sometimes, people to trick. Without people, a bard has no new tales to tell and no new stories to learn. So, in these unprecedented times, what is a bard to do? Continue reading “Being a Bard During a Quarantine”

Single Player Tabletop RPGs

If you’ve been trying to scratch the RPG itch and you’re missing the camaraderie of your tabletop gaming group because of stay at home orders and social distancing, we understand because we’re feeling it, too. And if you’re like me, after a day of staring at a computer screen for work, your eyes are tired and the last thing you want to do is stare at a screen to play online versions of your favorite games that often fail to achieve the same magic anyway. Additionally, RPGs and other tabletop games may not be your spouse’s idea of a fun or relaxing evening. So, what can you do? Maybe the solution lies in single-player role playing games. Being a Bard: How to Punk Out a Dragon

I once saw a list of Dungeons and Dragons cliché sayings. The one for the bard class read: I’ve never killed a dragon, but 29 ranks in bluff sure makes you think I did. That’s a great bardic turn of phrase. But, with far less ranks in bluff, I can teach you a much better bardic trick when facing a dragon.

You’ll recall from the last installment of Being a Bard, our intrepid bard, Roger Sparx, employed the Bugs Bunny Tactic—a cunning use of a disguise kit, the alter-self spell and good dice rolls—to disguise as a female hobgoblin, luring a male hobgoblin out of its ambush and into Roger Sparx’s party’s ambush. This time I’ll show you Roger’s next trick: bluffing a dragon out of fighting and walking away from its precious hoard. Continue reading “Being a Bard: How to Punk Out a Dragon”
